REVIEW

From the April My Monthly Cigars box (#47) comes a beautifully constructed cigar that has a closed foot and a perfect “tail” cap. The wrapper is veiny (non prominent), smooth, lightly modeled, oily and has a light patina. The pre light olfactory picks up a very faint cocoa as straight cut leads to a labored draw but is expected to open as the closed foot burns away.

A toast/light and starting up at mild+. Introductory notes of bakers spice (nutmeg) merges with mild coffee and a creamy nougat to make for some rich beginnings. An inch in and although there is an increase in strength, the creamy value remains and is especially felt on the finish were a raw cocoa note makes its entrance.

Around the 2 inch marker we see some more change as the strength reaches medium. Consistent with the addition of a lightly bitter walnut and some lingering pepper on the pallet. The burn is good and offers a bright white stacking ash on a thick and oily ash fringe. The finish counteracts the bitter walnut with a strong dark honey value on the mouth.

Getting into the 2/3 we see consistency with a very slow burn. The smooth retro and finish are the focal point of the experience thus far as we start to move forward in strength. Into the 3/3 and a jet white ash grows on a medium+ experience. Still consistent, we see a toasted bread join on the pallet. The finish is nothing short of a powerhouse of flavor that seems to last forever.

The bitterness of the walnut has also mellowed out and is now more reminiscent of a candied walnut. The concluding inch see a ramp into full and a truly pungent, oily, peppery and rich finish is at our disposal. Although nothing in the experience is indicative of Cuban tobacco the cigar is nonetheless quite complex and boasts some strength alongside a very taste (mouth) centered experience. Certainly recommend for medium to full strength lovers only.

This cigar may be an example of the future if the embargo with Cuba is lifted and blenders/manufacturers have the opportunity to use Cuban tobacco with “new world” leaf.
