Perla Del Mar Maduro
Size: Robusto 4.75 x 52
Wrapper – Connecticut broadleaf
Binder – Nicaraguan
Filler – Nicaraguan
This well constructed cigar has a hard box press and has beautiful preignition aromas of cocoa and dried raisins. The wrapper is dark (nearing oscuro) and super matte in finish. It also sports a super fine 1500 grit feeling to it making the cigar almost light absorbing. A straight cut leads us to a full open draw.
A light and toast and an immediate strength considering we are at the start of the journey. An enormously smoky stick, there is some 80% cocoa going on. The retro is a powerhouse on the nose as the finish is already an oily, pepper/mineral.
Into the 1/3 and a mild burn correction (canoe). The cocoa has left the building and a pungent toasted candied walnut is on the front stage. Strong but very non typical and interesting to say the least. I say candied because of the oily sweet value on the pallet. The retro remains powerful on the nose but is welcomed with a very long finish that includes some mineral components.
Getting into the 2/3 and getting medium, offering great plumes of smoke and consistency with the addition of a dark honey felt on the mouth and finish. Deeee-licious and what I define a very exemplary Nicaraguan experience.
Nearing the transition to the 3/3 and the burn is now fantastic. A flaky white ash builds and interestingly, the wrapper lightens when heated just behind the ash fringe. The profile is consistent and the retro is the point of interest. We are now medium full as well but still rich and sweet like nutty dessert.
Box shall be ordered!
The concluding portion and nub is consistent and sees a definite increase in pepper and general strength. A mild citrus has also made its way on the profile although mild. Powerful, complex, and truly a Nicaraguan experience.
